Passwords, Passwords Everywhere…

And not a single one that I can remember. This was the problem facing me not that long ago. On one hand it’s not a safe practice to use the same password for every website you use. Obviously I wouldn’t want to use ‘password’ on a random forum as well as for my internet banking website! But on the other hand making up and remembering ultra secure passwords containing letters, numbers and symbols for every website out there that I use is also not quite my cup of tea. Here’s how long a hacker would take to crack your passwords wide open:

So what’s a geek to do? Find an app for that of course. After my usual extensive research, I finally narrowed down my field of candidates to two: Roboform which is paid software and Lastpass which is free. Both not only let you create unique and secure passwords, they also help you to store them all in one place so you don’t have to remember.

Apart from the price, the major difference between them lies in the way they handle your passwords. Roboform functions mainly like a desktop app and your passwords are stored on your pc only. Last pass on the other hand, stores your passwords online which is a deal breaker for many, including me. But that is not to say it is insecure. The geek part of me prefers the control which Roboform offers over my passwords. You can read more about these two apps here and here.

Both are popular with users and in the end it just comes down to which app you are comfortable using. For me it was Roboform (the online storage and sync component didn’t work for me so I cannot comment on that). I’ve been using it for some time now and I believe I’ve finally found

    what did you like about it?
    I mean a browser has to be pretty amazing for me to give up both Firefox and Chrome..besides the new Firefox 4 beta looks so great I don't think Safari can compare...

Fourteen years of school. Three - four years of undergraduate college. Two years for a graduate degree. Start working or making babies. Sound familiar? It should, it’s what the majority of lives in this country look like. Ten years ago, I was headed down the same street.
